Ancient Salamis in the north of the island is one of Cyprus's main tourist attractions. Located some 6 km north of Famagusta, the ancient Greek city state now lies in ruins, but must have been one of the Mediterranean's most wonderful cities once. Overlooking the mouth of the Pedieos River, the ancient Salamis site was the capital of Cyprus as early as 1100 BC. The Pedieos River is Cyprus' longest waterway, originating in the Troodos Mountains near the Machairas Monastery, before flowing northeast towards the modern capital city Nicosia. It eventually turns eastwards, flowing into the sea at Famagusta Bay near Salamis. This must have been one of the main reasons, why Salamis was founded where it was, at Agios Sergios. It takes about one hour and ten minutes to drive from Larnaca to the village of Agios Sergios.

Covering an area of around two kilometers square, Salamis is filled with beautiful walkways lined by statues and has its own theater with 50 rows of seats. The theater has a capacity for 15,000 spectators, who could enjoy Greek theater drama and Roman gladiator fights against the beautiful azure background of the sea in Antiquity. The different nations who came to rule Cyprus over the following centuries included the Byzantine empire, an era which left two lovely churches behind on the Salamis site.

Also in the north of the island, on the Karpas Peninsula, the Monastery of Apostolos Andreas is still one of the island's most important religious sites today. Pilgrims still flock to the monastery to pray. Probably dating back in its oldest parts to the Middle Ages, the monastery was later altered and enlarged in the 19th century.

But Karpas Peninsula has other treasures to offer. The coastline is one of the most beautiful on Cyprus, and a great place to come if you love deserted beaches set against the background of hilly terrain, where you can go hiking or cycling. There's little public transport, so taking the car is essential, if you want to explore the 70 km long coastline of Karpas Peninsula, justly famous for its rugged beauty and grazing donkeys.
