Stretching along the southwest of Cyprus the Troodos Massif is a popular destination for day trips. The highest peak of the Massif is Mount Olympus, which rises 1,952 meters above sea level.

Picturesque villages on the slopes of the Troodos Mountains afford a glimpse into the “real” Cyprus, or at least what it was like before tourism changed it all. Pano Platres is a 41 minute drive from Larnaca and Kakopetria lies some 47 km distance from Larnaca, if you take the E801 route, an easy 52 minute drive. Also worth stopping off for is the village of Pedoulas, where the frescoes at the Church of Archangelos Michael (built 1474) are a highlight. The village is in the district of Nicosia, snoozing at an altitude of ca 1,100 metres above sea level. Pedoulas lies around 1 hour and 50 minutes' drive from Larnaca, taking the A9 route.

The lovely town of Kyrenia lies in the north of Cyprus, about 76 km distance from Larnaca. Overlooking the harbour, Kyernia Castle as it stands today was largely built by the Byzantines and the Venetians, but its origins are Roman. The four-tower construction seen today is mostly from the late 1400's. Inside the castle grounds stands a beautiful 12th century chapel and the castle is also home to the Shipwreck Museum, where the remains of a wreck discovered in 1965 is on display. It is one of the oldest known wrecks to be found, dating back to 300 BC. Some of the trading ship's cargo was still in-situ, including amphorae containing almonds and wine.
